How it Went Down 7/21/11

WOW, this segment got such a great response, it's staying. Thank you Rioters! for showing us YOU like something. Now on to yesterday's events making today's news.

* CONGRATS to Colin Cowherd of ESPN Radio and the co-host of "SportsNation" for continuing to be a fantastic broadcaster.  I began sitting down at my computer this morning ready to destroy Mike Greenberg and ESPN about something (which I will get to in about 30 seconds), but then The Herd w/ Colin Cowherd comes on and instead of towing the company line, he opens his show with the Tiger Woods's caddy story.  Good job Colin, you've been one of my favorite radio guys for a long time now and this is why.

* Now on to Mike and Crap in the Morning.  Here is a direct quote from Mike Greenberg about today's NFL Lockout events "its looks like it's coming to an end, it feels like it's been going on forever. It's been annoying, difficult and tedious, but it looks like it may finally be over."  Why was it annoying and tedious Mike? I know that you know the answer.  IT'S BECAUSE OF YOU AND YOUR CORPORATE WHORE COMPANY! I'm sorry for being emotional but literally 85% of ESPN's programming is NFL based, and the lockout is all there is to talk about that is current.  I know they try to keep it "business as usual" with their previews and lists, but my God, enough already.  ESPN's coverage actually makes me hope the NFL DOESN'T resolve their issues.  Really, I’m not joking.  I've had no break from football talk, and I've been trying to ignore it.  So Mike and Crap in the Morning, you are the reason it has been annoying and tedious.  Have you people at "The Worldwide Leader" ever thought that maybe your continuous mic up the ass technique of covering this s**t might actually be contributing to the strife between the owners and the players? That whole "settlement" crap that came down yesterday probably wouldn't have been as terrible as it was made out to be if you guys didn't cover it for 23 out of the 24 hours yesterday. God it's baseball season, cover that for more than 10 minutes will you? They almost seem annoyed when a baseball game has to start.

* Tiger Woods fired his caddy yesterday.  Is this a big deal?  He's a caddy.  Happy Gilmore used a homeless guy as his caddy and he won the Gold jacket. Now I understand that it's fictional, but it points out how important a caddy is. It's not. Now, I'm not a golfer, as a matter of fact I even suck at video game golf, but I don't get how a caddy could possibly help influence a pro the caliber of Tiger Woods.

* The Mets for real? The Mets beat the Cards for the 2nd night in a row and they stand at 49-48. That's respectable, but I'm not buying this team as a contender for anything but 3rd place in the East.  If they get within 3 games of the Braves for the Wild Card, then we can start talking.  BTW, where is Johan Santana? Haven't heard anything from the Johan camp in quite a while.

* Jose Reyes is officially off the trade market. I think Reyes's most recent leg injury scared both potential buyers and Reyes as far as a potential $20 million a year deal goes.  I believe the Mets are definitely in the driver’s seat to keep Reyes, and to keep him in the shortstop range; $15 million or so.

* Another credit to the Jets curse. Kris Jenkins retired yesterday from the numerous injuries he's suffered over the past 3 seasons. Since joining the Jets in 2008, he has torn his ACL twice and was barely on the field for most of the 2009 and 2010 seasons. This is what happens when a great player joins the Jets; they become not great anymore for a myriad of reasons.  It's just the way it is; you come to expect it as a Jets, Mets and Rangers fan.

* The Texas Rangers have their winning streak snapped in a fantastic way. If you're going to have a 12 game winning streak snapped, which is the best way to do it. I'm not sure if the Rangers picked the most encouraging way last night in Anaheim, when they blew an 8-3 in the 6th inning.  The Angels hung 5 runs on the Rangers bullpen in the 6th and beat back the hottest team in the Majors since the All Star Break.

* The US women’s World Tour. Abby Wambach, Hope Solo and Alex Morgan really get around…..the country. Over the past two days the US Women’s World Cup runner  up’s have been on all the ESPN platforms, David Letterman and last night in Rochester, NY for a Women’s pro soccer match.  First off, I didn’t even know there was a women’s pro soccer league, let alone one that can draw 15K to an event.  Well that’s what happened last night in Rochester.  Abby didn’t play, but she did delight the crowd with a few words at halftime.  Abby plays for the magicJack (is that like that thing I see advertised on cable TV) and was honored at the Western New York Flash’s home stadium in Rochester last night.  I guess when you’re a hero, you welcomed anywhere.

* ….and Finally, Kobe being wooed by the Turks. Turkish club Besiktas has reportedly offered Kobe Bryant $500K a week to play for them during the NBA lockout. Kobe wants a mil. Nets point guard Deron Williams signed with Besiktas a few weeks back and rumors have been abound of numerous players defecting to Turkey for the opportunity to cash in on this lockout; much to the NBA’s dismay.  But wait a second, hold the phone; maybe this isn’t so bad for the NBA. They would be going during the summer, they would get their stars back as soon as the lockout is over, and you get to market your product to the Middle East? Sounds like a solid business plan for the NBA.  If I’m David Stern, I enthusiastically endorse these moves.  The players will assume all the risk (if they get injured in Turkey their NBA contracts could be voided), and you get some reward; sounds great.  Maybe a little ghoulish, but I’m only thinking like a commissioner should.
